Coursera’s Job Skills Report 2026 is the most data-rich snapshot of enterprise learning we have today. Drawing from 6 million learners across approximately 7,000 organizations worldwide, it maps the fastest-growing skills across four career areas: Data, IT, Software & Product Development, and the rapidly expanding GenAI cohort. The headline figure — a 234% year-over-year surge in GenAI enrollments — captures the velocity of change. But the deeper story lies in what kinds of skills are actually surging, and what that reveals about the true shape of professional effectiveness.
The report distills its findings into six defining themes that, together, paint a portrait of a workforce in fundamental transition — not just learning new tools, but being asked to think, adapt, and collaborate in qualitatively different ways.
Six defining themes of 2026
Of these six themes, one stands above the rest as the single most revealing signal in the entire dataset: the extraordinary, universal surge in demand for Critical Thinking.
Critical Thinking: the universal skill surge
Every single career-area cohort shows triple-digit year-over-year growth in Critical Thinking enrollments. This isn’t a niche trend — it’s a structural shift in what the workforce is being asked to do.
Fastest-growing skills by career area
The report ranks the top 10 trending skills across four domains by largest enrollment share improvement from October 2023 through September 2025. A pattern is immediately visible: AI-specific competencies dominate, but they are consistently layered on top of enduring foundational skills — and governance and human-judgment skills appear in every list.
Across the GenAI ecosystem, learners overwhelmingly gravitate toward the same handful of tools. ChatGPT leads enterprise enrollments by a wide margin, followed by Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini. Developer-oriented frameworks like LangChain and Anthropic Claude round out the top five — a signal that enterprise teams are moving beyond chat interfaces toward building AI-powered applications.
Narrowing the gender gap in tech
One of the most encouraging findings is the steady narrowing of the gender gap in technical learning. Women’s share of enterprise enrollments increased across all three traditional career areas between 2023 and 2025 — and in the GenAI cohort, women’s participation surged from 36% to 41%, a five-percentage-point jump in a single year. Women also show 6× greater enrollment rates in beginner-level GenAI courses, suggesting the pipeline is widening from the entry point.
Top GenAI skills by region
Adaptation is not uniform. Each region’s #1 fastest-growing GenAI skill reflects its distinct industrial base and digital maturity. Asia Pacific leads with Generative AI Agents, signaling enterprise-grade automation. Europe prioritises Concision — a communication skill exercised through AI. North America focuses on Email Automation, while Sub-Saharan Africa shows strong growth in Business Process Automation and Agentic Systems.
What Coursera’s data is really telling us
We have now seen the top 10 skills across four career areas — 40 entries in total. But a striking pattern emerges when we step back and classify these entries not by domain, but by what they actually demand from a professional:
The majority of the fastest-growing skills in Coursera’s 2026 data are not technical skills at all. They are cognitive, interpersonal, and adaptive competencies being exercised through technical tools. Coursera’s 2026 report confirms that foundational skills like SQL and JSON remain indispensable, and that AI competencies are now mainstream. But the defining signal — triple-digit growth in Critical Thinking, governance, and cross-functional adoption — points to a reality the industry is still catching up to: technical training alone addresses only about 25% of what makes a professional effective.
