The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India to assess and accredit higher education institutions in the country. It was established in 1994 and operates under the Ministry of Education.

The main objectives of NAAC are:

  1. Quality Assessment: NAAC assesses the quality and performance of higher education institutions based on a set of predefined criteria and parameters. It evaluates various aspects such as teaching-learning, research, infrastructure, governance, and student support services.
  2. Accreditation: NAAC awards accreditation grades to institutions based on their performance and adherence to quality standards. Accreditation helps institutions in gaining recognition, improving their quality, and enhancing their overall reputation.
  3. Quality Enhancement: NAAC aims to enhance the quality of education in India by providing feedback and recommendations to institutions for improvement. It encourages institutions to adopt best practices, innovative teaching methods, and research activities.
  4. Benchmarking: NAAC establishes benchmarks and standards for higher education institutions in India. It sets guidelines and criteria that institutions need to meet in order to achieve accreditation.
  5. Capacity Building: NAAC conducts workshops, training programs, and orientation sessions for institutions to build their capacity for quality assurance and improvement. It also provides support and guidance to institutions in self-assessment and preparation for accreditation.
  6. Information Dissemination: NAAC publishes reports and findings of the accreditation process, which helps students, parents, and other stakeholders in making informed decisions about higher education institutions. It also maintains a public database of accredited institutions.
  7. International Recognition: NAAC collaborates with international accreditation agencies and organizations to promote quality assurance in higher education. It participates in global discussions and initiatives related to quality assessment and accreditation.

NAAC plays a crucial role in ensuring and promoting quality in higher education institutions in India.
