Introduction
Nestled in the heart of Trivandrum, the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) stands as a beacon of innovation and excellence in healthcare. As a statutory body and Autonomous Institute of National Importance under the Department of Science and Technology, SCTIMST is dedicated to developing cutting-edge biomedical technologies, providing exemplary patient care, and participating in vital public health initiatives.
Historical Background
Established with a vision to revolutionize medical science in India, SCTIMST has carved a unique niche within the landscape of national institutes. Its mission is executed through three distinct wings: a tertiary referral super specialty hospital focusing on Cardiac and Neurosciences, the Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies (AMCHSS), and the Biomedical Technology (BMT) Wing, which operates across two campuses.

Academic Programs
SCTIMST boasts a faculty strength of 135, comprising 83 medical professionals and 52 scientists, supported by a dedicated staff of 917 across its campuses. The institute offers a range of advanced academic programs, including new DM-PhD and MCh-PhD program, alongside PhD and M Tech degrees.
Research Excellence
At the forefront of research, SCTIMST focuses on high-quality treatment for cardiac and neurological disorders, alongside the indigenous development of biomedical devices. The BMT Wing is pivotal in this mission, housing state-of-the-art laboratories and multidisciplinary teams engaging in applied research and medical device development. The institute has garnered numerous accolades, including the prestigious National Technology Award and several National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) awards for its contributions to biomedical technology.

Innovation and Technology Transfer
It has 150 sealed patents (130 Indian, 20 International), with 70 patent applications pending, specific to MedTech. The patent-to-commercialization ratio exceeding 30%, which is among the highest in India. The institute’s medical device testing services are ISO 17025 accredited, demonstrating its commitment to quality and excellence. During past 25 years, over 50 technologies were transferred, with 16 achieving commercial success.
Success Stories/Flagship Products

The Biomedical Technology Wing of SCTIMST has been instituted as a R&D center in public sector to enable Indian industry to make ‘deep-tech’ medical products through the development and transfer of technology. The first two original technologies came out, namely the mechanical heart valve and disposable blood bags, made notable economic impact, bringing SCTIMST to limelight. The Chitra Heart Valve, produced by TTK Healthcare, which has been implanted in about 200,000 patients by now, has the lowest price and lowest reported failure rates globally. The introduction of blood bags has transformed blood transfusion practices owing to the provision of component separation and to the highly affordable pricing. The relicensing approach enabled the mass production of 50 million pieces per year by local companies, making Trivandrum the global hub of blood bags.
TIMed: Technology Business Incubator
Launched in 2015, the Technology Business Incubator (TIMed) nurtures startups in the medical devices and biomaterials sector. It provides mentorship and resources to empower entrepreneurs, scientists, and clinicians to bring their innovative products to market. Noteworthy successes include Sascan Meditech Pvt Ltd, which received the National Technology Award in 2023.

Present ventures and Future Directions
Designated as a Technical Research Centre (TRC) for Biomedical Devices by the Department of Science and Technology, the BMT Wing is tasked with developing technologies across various segments, including cardiovascular and neuroprosthetics. The TRC has transitioned numerous proof-of-concept devices to technology transfer stages, enhancing the landscape of biomedical innovation in India.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, SCTIMST’s rapid response resulted in developing 14 fast-track projects for pandemic management, including RNA isolation kits and disinfection systems, with some products accepted by the World Health Organization for international dissemination.

Looking ahead, the institute plans to expand its facilities with a new 170-bedded hospital under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna, positioning itself as a leader in cardiac and neurosciences healthcare in India.
SCTIMST- Bringing Life to Innovation
With a commitment to excellence in education, research, and healthcare, SCTIMST is not just an institute; it is a transformative force in the medical field. Any MedTech researcher with an innovative idea, may it be a high-risk ‘Class D’ implantable device, can develop and validate it till preclinical stage as per International Standards, inside a single campus. Prospective students and collaborators are invited to join this dynamic community, where innovation meets compassion, and where the future of healthcare is being shaped today.
